Hey guys. Just wanted to know if it was possible to use the VirtualHost from Apache and the
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\host.(it has no extension)
file to avoid having to pay for a DNS thingy. I really can't afford to buy a DNS, and i know how to edit the ( long directory ) file thingy there to allow you to create a domain ( so that i could enter www.example.net instead of localhost into my browser window to acces the website thingy ) and i wanted to know if another computer could acces the site once i had everything running ( which i do have )

did I get you right? you are asking if it is enough to add an entry to your hosts file in order to get a domain?

this works - but only LOCALLY from your pc. no other computer would be able to access it (because other PCs have other hosts files obviously)

you have to buy/register a domain if you want to use it (or get a free subdomain from somewhere). that's the only way.

or you create a virus which modifies all host files out there. lol.

In my current state of financial dispair. I do believe I'm going to have to write the virus I was supposed to get a job on some silly mainframe thingy but they "let me go".

Bastards. But yeah, I thought that it was local only. Infact i was kinda hoping it wasn't but my brain was totally zoned on the fact that it might work. Lol. Fail of epic proportions. But i guess that since there aren't any LAN's scheduleded til next year for me, i guess I'll use my server rig to setup a DNS server. It takes hours but it is usually worth it, i once built one for a company i was working for, it took me ages to figuire how the hell i was going to get it to work, but acouple looks around debians "tutorials" thingy adn i found some useful info, good hting i kept the link saved. Well, i guess there is no gain without being beaten to death witha club and then dragged by your ankles through the desert ( maybe i should of just writen pain there, but im just trying to show how much hard work im going to ahve to put in )

JohnTheFox has written
Isnt codeing virus illegal? Are you saying your trying to get your own sever or somthing like that?

OMG! HAHAHAHA!!! I was joking and so was DC ( i think? ). I am trying to get a proper domain and not some cheapo sub-domain so im going to build my own DNS server ( but i can't use normal things like .copm or .net, it was to be like .fls or somehting so that it doesn't interupt the domain server that you have to pay for )
