probably not the right place to post this but whatever
I was updating around 60 packages and after it finished it asked for a reboot
a while later I tried to reboot... But my monitor just turned black and the system wasn't responding (i.e. Pressing caps lock did nothing).
so I held down the power button for 5 secs and then booted again. Got pass grub fine and tried to boot into debian. After the regular text part, black screen + unresponsive system again
yay
so basically x and/or gdm3 is broken.
I forced the computer off again and booted into debian's recovery mode which worked fine.
fsck -n tells me that part of the hard drive is messed up
I'll see what I can do with fsck tomorrow :p
btw I have two other operating systems which work - xp and linuxfromscratch
(note: trying to fix the debian partition using the linuxfromscratch system would be problematic cuz the former is ext4 and the latter runs on ext3) Use your Debian Live CD. It should fix all the problems. Well, this has happened to me before, the problem is that your display settings ( which are stored as an xml document or tyhe like on your computer ) can sometimes be corrupted by the "hold power button for 5 secs" thing, so one way is to get used to using the terminal for everything. Or change to another virtual terminal with cntrl+alt+2 or whatever and type 'startx' into it. This might solve your problems. However I cannot be sure because I normally use a GNU/Linux distro called SliTaz. I also use Fedora Core but last time I checked Fedora core wasn't much like the original Debian. FlooD GAME BANNED

@sunny don't have a cd drive on this comp. (i installed debian by booting from xp)
@danny I've tried ctrl alt f2... No response.
startx from recovery mode does the black screen too lmao Then it's ur display setting for sure. Try all the other virtual terminals though, they go from 1 to 6 ( if u didnt already know ). Sometimes 7. FlooD GAME BANNED

tried all of them yesterday and nothing happened
as I said before, the system is COMPLETELY unresponsive after entering the black screen. The caps/num lock buttons don't even do anything...
I'm planning on using a live usb and running fsck or something from there Usually this kind of problem would have to have a complete reinstall or repair install, not sure if Debian has that option though
Dude, I remember having Kernel panic. I don't remember how I resolved that, but I think with a live CD. Your only hope is that usb, I guess. FlooD GAME BANNED

no
my only hope is throwing this god dam fcking ati card in the garbage.
turns out fglrx drivers got screwed up. now i have to use xorg's ati drivers which means no cs2d on linux for me
Drivers? Lol, that happens a lot too when you turn off with the power button, once I corrupted a entire re-compile of Linux ( added a couple networking modules ) when I did that. It wasn't that bad, I still had the source, but the problem was that it took hours
