I'm 100% sure there will be huge activity boost as soon as DC will add gamepad support to get compability with Steam Deck

I really miss the old days too. After the steam release the game went downhill by many factors.
First of all the game needs to be fixed and playable in modern hardware, then we can talk about adding new features. When you have many competitive games who offers better conditions is impossible to play cs2d, unless you feel nostalgic and have a group of friends to play.
Also the playerbase decreased over time: people got jobs, got kids and a family to take care of, lost passion because the game is stuck in the past, etc...
The game had potencial to make a huge comeback but only depends on DC for now, why CS2D is not a open source project?

Yeah this might be a factor but not the major one

you got it , slimK
all what you have mentioned is completely true and i really stand with the idea of making it open source project thats a Great idea , i did a research about CS2D project on github i found an anonymous user that shared the usual extracted folder from cs2d zipped file which we all know its contents and surprisingly he added credits to darkshadow (DC) in the README.md file i dont know if that user has a real connection and work with DC or he has just stolen the project , also about CS2D improvement i guess that i will take a long time since there is High Pressure on DC and he is working on Standard III

Well Thanks for all of you for giving suggestions / opinions in this thread

Uh.. that's interesting. I doubt that this person has permission from me to re-upload that stuff on GitHub. At least I can't remember that I gave that permission. But I guess it's not really a big problem.

Wait where does this darkshadow thing come from? He gave credit to someone called darkshadow? No, DC doesn't stand for darkshadow. That wouldn't make any sense at all.

(wow, that fandom page is slightly outdated. lol)

I made it (and that whole wiki) back in 2010, time flies I was think of updating it but for now I'll leave it as as-is, as a time capsule

Also, to attempt to stay on-topic, the "DarkShadow" people are talking about is probably one of these users: https://unrealsoftware.de/users.php?o=5&d=1&il=&p=0&c=&f=darkshadow - who is mentioned on CS2D's own Readme.txt (the aforementioned Github page just copy-pasted it), credited for “many dropped weapon images”.

lol. Yes, that's just the original Readme in the CS2D folder. That guy wrote and copied nothing. He just uploaded the CS2D folder to a GitHub repo. That's it.
It's GitHub's default behavior to show the readme.txt (or .md) contents as text at the repo main page.

@user DC:
well then who wrote "darkshadow" in that readme.txt file ? , whoever wrote that must have made a mistake right ?

i feel that we are getting distracted by the main topic from this thread , so what ? , no actual solution to the purpose of this thread ?

No, why? I wrote it and it's not a mistake. Why do you think so? This is a list of people who contributed stuff to CS2D. It even says who contributed what. It is your mistake that you randomly assumed that DC stands for darkshadow for some reason. DC is not in the list of course because why would I thank myself? That would be weird.

Regarding the actual thread topic: It has been discussed a few times in other threads already. I'm afraid there is no magic solution to bring back people. Best everyone can do is telling friends about the game and playing with them.

@user DC:

Hear me out , DC
and dont take it personally

i just thought that darkshadow is you , and from my point of view you have the right to add yourself in the credit because you have already worked a lot on the game so why dont you add yourself

about the topic : no there are many solutions but we dont know any of them , yeah asking my friends is a factor but it wont make the game alive again as it was

sorry for any misunderstanding , have a good day , DC

Well, some of the key factors that could help bring more players to the game have already been mentioned: keeping up with the standards of modern games, addressing the existing bugs, and investing in more consistent and effective marketing efforts. These steps would likely make a positive difference.
That said, it may be challenging for one person alone to handle all of this. Opening space for collaboration or support from others could make the process more manageable and potentially lead to better results.

@user mrc: You are entirely right but CS2D is built on heavily outdated tech. Keeping up with modern standards would mean rewriting it. Everything else wouldn't be sustainable. Even when you do so and have the best game, it might not magically recover by word of mouth alone.

Regarding marketing: Everyone could do that. But who wants to burn money to market a free game? Nobody. Not even me. You won't get that money back because the game is free. You can try it without money but I doubt that you get very far.
